Worship Team Structure, Taking On New Instruments, and Learning within Community

Podcast Episode #177

Worship Artistry community legend joins the podcast to talk about taking on new instruments as an adult and learning within community.

Kristina and Jason reflect on worship team structures and the excitement fall brings (read: the team is back!!).

On how his journey began

Started to play guitar from YouTube videos. Started with electric guitar because I’m technical. Learning from home I realized I like certain minor chords more than others.

On getting through roadblocks

I practice everyday. I knew if I practiced everyday I’d get it. I’m a “go big or go home” kind of guy, so I knew I wanted to learn and play guitar for the glory of God.

On learning within community

I’m a community driven person. During the pandemic that wasn’t possible. The group was a big help for that because I was surrounded by people that were better than I.

On the difference between being a musician and playing guitar

Player just want to play and often overplay. Musician focus on the call and response. As a musician you don’t have to fill every space.

I also realized when watching tutorials I focused not on what you would do but how you would do it. I want to express emotion as I play, make it sound like a conversation, and for me to be technically accurate.

On playing with others for the first time

I overhyped it initially. So don’t overhyped it and just be yourself.

On what to buy if they’re just starting out

Figure out the sound that you want. Look at what other people that you enjoy learning from use and get that.
