3 Easy Ways to Stay Sharp All Summer

With all the travel and sunshine, your music skills may be dulling. Rather than fight the summer rhythm, let's look at how you can use the down time to thrive.

Less Practice More Play

You can promise yourself you are going to practice your fingers off, but who wants to sit inside and practice when all your friends are headed to the lake? Rather than hiding your instrument away so it doesn’t shame you, sit down with it and only play what you already know. Sure it might only be four chords, but you can play a lot of songs with four chords or less.

Get creative, goof around. Enjoy and stay acquainted with your instrument! There will be plenty of time to buckle down in the fall.

Slow Grow

If you do want to grow your skills over the summer, pick one song and take it piece by piece–there’s no rush. Plan on having it down by September. Narrowing your focus and taking it slow will be much more conducive to a summer schedule.

Plan Ahead

Whenever you step out of a consistent rhythm you are in danger of never stepping back in. Life gets busy so plan what your practice is going to look like in the fall. You may have to do a bit of a ramp up, but put a starting date on it and stick to it. You want to be a better player, so plan on how you are going to do it.

Everybody needs some time off. Don’t swing to such an extreme that you forget how to play your instrument. Keep it simple and keep it fun.
