Behind-the-Scenes Look at Up-and-Coming Artist Southland
This year we’re trying to highlight up-and-coming and under-the-radar artists who are making music for the church.
Allow us to introduce you to Southland. Hailing from Australia and born out of a local youth movement, their music captures a desire to see a big God move in big ways all around the world. Frontman and lead singer Lachlan Holmes was kind enough to answer a few questions about the band’s heart and music. Give it a read and then check out their new album Like The World Has Never Seen, available now on Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music or wherever you listen.
1. Why is congregational worship important to you and how does it impact your writing?
It is undeniable that throughout scripture, history, and today whenever believers gather to praise Jesus, he is there in our midst!
So that knowledge and picture impact every lyric, melody, note, and progression as we come with the hope that these would give language and articulation to the prayers of people across the world.
2. I’m sure you love all your songs but if you had to pick, which one would you love to find life in the global church?
This is the hardest question because the honest answer is all of them. They all carry biblical truth, anointing, and power and they work so well in churches of all sizes! But if there was to be one, it would be 'A Great Awakening'. I believe it's a prayer for the capital C Church to grab a hold of, as we declare a revival like the world has never seen. We already know of churches from 5, 500 to 5000 to 50,000 where 'A Great Awakening' has become an anthem for their church and people!
3. What are some of your musical influences?
There are too many! Some of our heroes in the world of worship are Hillsong United, Darlene Zschech, Martin Smith & Delirious?, Brandon Lake, Kari & Cody Carnes, and so many more!
Outside of that One Republic, Coldplay, Kings Of Leon, and Switchfoot.
4. How have you seen your music have an impact in your community?
These songs have given our community, our church a sound, melody, and lyrics to the prayers we have been praying! None of this was just a good idea, but we can so confidently and humbly say these are gifts from God! We have seen it encourage people, build their faith, and to be reminded that God can and will move again.
