Thoughts on "In Jesus Name (God of Possible) " by Katy Nichole

In Jesus Name (God of Possible) by Katy Nichole is a catchy, prayer-focused song but where does it fit best in a congregational worship setting?

As with any worship song we introduce it’s important to understand the meaning of the song, as well as where it fits in our worship gatherings.

First, let’s take a look at the lyrics for In Jesus Name (God of Possible):

I speak the name of Jesus over you

In your hurting, in your sorrow

I will ask my God to move

I speak the name 'cause it's all that I can do

In desperation, I'll seek Heaven

And pray this for you

I pray for your healing

That circumstances would change

I pray that the fear inside would flee in Jesus name

I pray that a breakthrough would happen today

I pray miracles over your life in Jesus name, in Jesus name

I speak the name of all authority

Declaring blessings, every promise

He is faithful to keep

I speak the name no grave could ever hold

He is greater, He is stronger

He's the God of possible

Come believe it

Come receive it

Oh, the power of His Spirit is now forever yours

Come believe it

Come receive it

In the mighty name of Jesus, all things are possible

I pray for your healing

That circumstances will change

I pray that the fear inside will flee in Jesus name

I pray that a breakthrough

Would happen today

I pray miracles over your life in Jesus name

I pray for revival

For restoration of faith

I pray that the dead will come alive in Jesus name

In Jesus name

The first thing we notice is the song is not addressed to God but to our community. In fact, it doesn’t even define who we’re praying for. You could pray these words over anyone going through a difficult time. It’s not exclusive to believers and therein lies its power. In a world where “I’m praying for you” is often replaced with “you’re in my thoughts”, it’s a powerful statement of belief and confidence to say “I speak the name of Jesus over you” and to name specifically what we are praying for. It puts words in our spirit so they are available when we need to call on them.

So how do you introduce it in a worship gathering? Because it’s not addressed to God, it needs some context. If you incorporate prayer into your worship gatherings already it’s great background music. If that’s not something you usually do it can be a great way to introduce it. You could sing it and ask people to stand and sing the chorus over them.

Another idea would be to go line by line and ask “Who needs prayer for healing? Who needs prayer for a change in circumstances? Who needs a breakthrough? We’re going to sing this in solidarity. This is our prayer today.”

Prayer is powerful. Praying with others is a show of love, support and compassion and it absolutely has a place in our worship gatherings.
